We are so excited to be right here with you at this moment in the season! Late April is genuinely the hinge point of the entire growing year in Southeast Iowa — the last frost window is closing, soil temperatures are on the rise, and the choices we make in these next two weeks can shape everything that follows.
We have put together this guide to cover every topic from our April 25 and 26 Fairfield Community Garden Spring Sprouts workshop in full depth, with videos, articles, and practical guidance from both local and nationally respected educators. How this post is organized
This resource was developed for the Fairfield Community Garden Spring workshop in April and is written for all Fairfield area home gardeners, small farmers, and community growers. 1. Last Frost Date — What It Is, What It Is Not, and How to Use It
The last frost date is probably the most talked-about number in spring gardening — and honestly, one of the most misunderstood. We want to make sure everyone on our team is working from the same understanding: the last frost date is not the date after which frost cannot happen. It is a statistical average built from decades of historical weather data, representing the point at which frost becomes less likely than not. Think of it as a planning guide, not a promise of safety.
For Southeast Iowa and the Fairfield area specifically, here is what those numbers mean in real terms:
- April 16–30: Average last frost window at 30% probability. Frost is more likely than not on any given night in this range.
- May 1–10: Frost probability drops significantly, but is still possible, particularly in low-lying areas after a cold front.
- May 10–12: The date by which 90% of years have seen the final frost. This is the safe window for frost-sensitive crops like tomatoes, peppers, and basil.
Here is something we find gardeners often overlook: the microclimate of your specific garden matters enormously. Low spots, areas near pavement, south-facing beds against a wall, and raised beds all behave quite differently from one another. Frost pools in low areas and radiates away from surfaces that stored heat during the day. Getting to know your own plot’s particular behavior — where it warms first, where cold air settles — will make you a much more confident planner over time.
What this means right now — April 25 and 26
Looking at the AccuWeather forecast for our workshop weekend, we are seeing highs of 60–64°F with overnight lows of 42–43°F. No frost is predicted for the workshop weekend itself. But those overnight lows are still cold enough that warm-season transplants like tomatoes and peppers need to stay protected indoors. We want to see night temperatures consistently above 50°F and a clean 7-day forecast before warm-season crops go outside.

2. Soil Temperature and Seed Germination
Here is a distinction we want every gardener on our team to internalize: air temperature is what you feel when you step outside. Soil temperature is what your seeds actually experience. In spring — especially in Southeast Iowa’s clay-heavy soils — these two numbers can be dramatically different. Soil can stay cold for several days after air temperatures feel genuinely warm, particularly after cloudy stretches or rain.
Soil temperature is the single most reliable indicator of whether your seeds will germinate successfully. We cannot emphasize this enough. Planting in soil that is too cold does not just slow germination — it can cause seeds to rot in the ground before they ever have a chance to sprout.
Practical Tip
A soil thermometer costs $10 to $15 at most garden centers and is one of the best small investments a gardener can make. Insert the probe 2 to 4 inches deep — where seeds and roots will actually be. Take the reading in the morning before the day’s sun has warmed the surface, which gives you the most reliable baseline for planting decisions.
Soil temperature guide for crops we commonly grow in Fairfield
- Peas: 35–40°F minimum. Will germinate slowly but reliably at this range. Above 75°F, germination drops sharply.
- Spinach and lettuce: 35–45°F minimum. Optimal at 60–65°F. Will not germinate well above 80–85°F.
- Radishes, beets, carrots: 40–50°F minimum. Carrots are slow at low temperatures — thin your stands diligently.
- Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower transplants: 40°F minimum soil for good root establishment.
- Tomatoes (transplants): 55–60°F soil minimum. Tomatoes planted in cold soil will sit stagnant, often for weeks.
- Peppers (transplants): 65°F preferred. The most temperature-sensitive of common vegetables.
- Cucumbers, squash, zucchini: 60°F minimum. These warm quickly once conditions are right.
- Green beans: 60°F minimum. Beans planted in cold, wet soil will rot.
- Basil: 65–70°F soil. Basil is extremely cold-sensitive.

3. Hardening Off Seedlings
If you have been starting seeds indoors, or picked up transplants from a greenhouse or local nursery, those plants have been living in a sheltered world — steady temperatures, no wind, controlled humidity, diffused or artificial light. Moving directly from that environment into the full outdoor garden is genuinely a shock to a plant’s system. Skipping or rushing the hardening-off process is one of the most common reasons we see healthy-looking transplants fail after going in the ground, and it is entirely preventable.
Hardening off is the deliberate, gradual process of introducing indoor-grown plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 14 days. Think of it as the plant’s orientation period before its first real season in the field.
The hardening-off process — step by step
- Days 1–3: Place seedlings outside in a sheltered, partly shaded location protected from wind for 1 to 2 hours per day. Bring back inside.
- Days 4–6: Increase outdoor time to 3 to 4 hours. Begin introducing some direct sun. Continue bringing inside at night.
- Days 7–9: Leave outside for most of the day including full sun. Bring inside if overnight lows will drop below 40°F for cool-season crops, or below 50°F for warm-season crops.
- Days 10–14: Leave outside overnight if conditions allow. Plants are now ready to transplant.
Tips and things to watch for during hardening off
- Do not harden off on very windy days early in the process. Wind desiccates leaves faster than roots can compensate.
- If a cold snap arrives mid-process, bring plants back inside and restart gradually.
- Reduce watering slightly during hardening — this encourages toughening of cell walls.
- Watch for sunscald: pale, papery patches caused by too-rapid sun exposure. Provide more shade for a few more days if you see this.
- Plants from outdoor nurseries are usually already hardened off. Plants from indoor greenhouses or big-box stores may not be.
Common Mistake to Avoid
Please do not assume that “it looks warm out” means it is safe to rush your plants outside. Seedlings that have been under grow lights indoors can be severely damaged by direct outdoor sun even on a mild, pleasant spring day if they have not been properly acclimated. The sun intensity outside is far greater than any grow light setup. When in doubt, err on the side of more gradual exposure. Your plants will thank you for the patience.

4. Direct Sow vs. Transplant — Choosing the Right Method for Each Crop
One of the most important things we can teach newer gardeners is that not every vegetable benefits from indoor starting and transplanting. Some crops are actively harmed by it — their roots resent being disturbed and they never quite recover. Others absolutely require the head start that indoor growing provides, especially here in Iowa where our growing season puts real constraints on timing.
Best crops to direct sow outdoors
- Peas — resent root disturbance
- Carrots, beets, radishes — taproot crops, always direct sow
- Turnips and parsnips
- Spinach, arugula — fast enough to skip head start
- Beans (all types) — very fast growers
- Dill and cilantro — bolt if roots are disturbed
- Sunflowers
Best crops to start indoors and transplant
- Tomatoes — season too short in Iowa to direct sow
- Peppers — very slow to mature
- Eggplant
- Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts
- Celery and celeriac — extremely slow growers
- Onions from seed — start very early
- Basil — cold-sensitive; start after last frost
Succession planting — the habit that keeps on giving
Instead of putting in all your lettuce, radishes, or spinach on one day and ending up with more than you can eat at once, make several small sowings of the same crop every 10 to 14 days. This spreads your harvest over weeks. Radishes, lettuce, spinach, arugula, and green beans are all ideal candidates. Mark your calendar right now with two or three future sowing dates for your fastest-maturing crops.
Thinning — Do Not Skip This Step
We know it feels wrong to pull up healthy seedlings — but direct-sown seeds almost always need to be thinned. Crowded plants compete for water and nutrients, produce poorly, and are more vulnerable to disease. Carrots and beets especially: thinning is non-negotiable for these crops. Thin to the spacing on the seed packet once seedlings are 1 to 2 inches tall. You can eat the thinnings in a salad and feel good about it.

No invasive plants, corn, or woody perennials are permitted in member plots. Plants over 6 feet tall must be staked or trellised and must not shade neighboring plots. If you are planning to grow vining crops — cucumbers, pole beans, indeterminate tomatoes — plan your staking and trellising before you plant, not after. The provided trellises are there for you to use, and we ask that you keep rambling vines within your plot boundaries out of respect for your neighbors.

5. Cool Season Crops — What Is Still Available to Plant in Late April

Cool-season crops — lettuce, spinach, kale, radishes — are among the fastest and easiest to produce in abundance. We want to make sure nobody reads the warming temperatures and concludes that the cool-season window is closing. For many crops, late April is actually the peak of it. The soil is workable, temperatures are in a range that cool crops genuinely thrive in, and there is still enough spring ahead to get real, meaningful harvests before summer heat pushes things to bolt.

Bolting — Know the Signs
Cool-season crops bolt when they experience sustained heat or day lengths that signal the end of their natural season. Watch for: a sudden upward growth spurt in the center of the plant, leaves becoming elongated rather than wide, and emerging flower buds. Harvest the moment you see these signals. To extend your window, choose bolt-resistant varieties, keep plants well-watered during warm spells, and consider shade cloth on hot days.

Published just two weeks ago, Susan planted directly in the garden on April 6 in her Zone 5b/6a garden — the same hardiness zone as Fairfield. Timely and directly applicable to our conditions right now.
6. Watering Young Plants — Seeds, Seedlings, and New Transplants
Young plants are significantly more vulnerable to both overwatering and underwatering than established ones. Their root systems are shallow and simply cannot reach deeper soil moisture the way a mature plant can. Watering correctly in the first few weeks after planting is one of the highest-impact things you can do for your garden’s success.
Direct-sown seeds
Seeds need consistent moisture from the moment they go into the ground until they have emerged and established two to four true leaves. Even a brief drying out can halt germination entirely. In warm or windy weather, check and water daily, sometimes twice a day. Use a fine, gentle spray — a strong jet of water can wash seeds out of the bed or push them too deep to germinate.
New transplants — the critical first 7 to 14 days
Water thoroughly at planting — this first watering is one of the most important things you can do. It settles the root ball into contact with the surrounding soil and eliminates air pockets around the roots. Check soil moisture at 1 to 2 inches deep every day for the first week. The goal is to keep the top 2 to 3 inches consistently moist while roots are establishing.
As plants establish — shifting your approach
Shift toward less frequent but deeper watering as plants mature. Infrequent, deep watering encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil profile, where they become far more resilient during dry spells. Water when the soil is dry at 2 inches deep, and water until it is wet at 6 inches deep. In SE Iowa’s clay soils, this usually takes less water than gardeners expect.
Best practices
- Water in the early morning when possible. Reduces evaporation and allows foliage to dry before cool evening temperatures, reducing disease risk.
- Water at the base of the plant, not overhead on leaves. Wet foliage invites disease, especially on brassicas and tomatoes.
- Midday wilting is sometimes normal. If plants recover by evening, they are fine. If still wilted in the cool of early morning, they need water.
- After a rain, feel the soil before watering. SE Iowa clay soils hold moisture for 24 to 48 hours after a good rain. Do not water plants that rain has already watered.
Bottom Watering for Seedlings in Trays
We strongly recommend bottom watering for seedlings in trays — adding water to the tray beneath the pots and letting the soil absorb it upward. It encourages roots to grow downward, keeps the soil surface drier (reducing damping-off fungus), and ensures the entire root zone is evenly moistened. Fill the tray to about half the height of the pots, let it absorb for 30 minutes, then pour out any remaining standing water.

Our community garden uses a shared water hydrant. Use only hand sprayers or watering cans — no hose-end sprayers. Please limit your watering to 30 minutes when others are waiting. Always confirm the hydrant is fully turned off before locking the gate. The city water from the hydrant is safe for watering your garden and washing hands, but is not considered safe for drinking. Please bring your own water to the garden.

7. Monitoring the Weather — April in Fairfield Demands Your Attention
We want to be direct with you about this: April in Fairfield is not a gentle, predictable month. The AccuWeather forecast for April 2026 shows highs climbing into the mid-80s in early April, followed by overnight lows dropping to 30°F on April 19, then a return to mild mid-60s by our workshop weekend. Rain arrives at month’s end. One unmonitored cold night can undo a week of careful planting work. We need everyone monitoring the forecast regularly.
Being a self-directed gardener means making it a personal practice to check the forecast every 2 to 3 days throughout April and May. We will not be able to call everyone before a cold night arrives. The forecast is freely available to every gardener in our community — those who use it consistently grow better gardens.

What different conditions mean for your garden

Slugs are among the most damaging pests our spring gardens face in Southeast Iowa. And fireflies are among the most beloved signs of summer right here in Fairfield. We want to share something that connects these two facts in a way that has real, practical implications for every organic gardener in our community.

Understanding slugs — what we are actually dealing with
Slugs are not insects — they are land-dwelling mollusks, more closely related to clams than to beetles or caterpillars. This means general organic insecticides have no effect on them whatsoever. Slugs feed primarily at night and in wet, overcast conditions, which is why they are especially active during the damp, cool weeks of April and May. The damage they cause — irregular holes in leaves, collapsed seedlings, slime trails across beds — is frequently misdiagnosed as insect damage and treated with the wrong products.
How to identify slug damage
- Irregular, ragged holes in leaves — not clean cuts the way caterpillars make
- Seedlings disappearing entirely overnight, particularly lettuce, spinach, basil, and brassica starts
- Silvery slime trails on leaves, soil, or bed edges in the morning
- Damage concentrated near the soil surface or where mulch is thick
- No visible pest during daylight inspection (slugs hide under debris and mulch during the day)
Organic slug control — what actually works
- Hand-picking at night: Go out 30 to 60 minutes after dark with a flashlight. Drop slugs into a bucket of soapy water. Highly effective, especially for severe infestations. Do this several nights in a row.
- Board traps: Lay a 2×4 at the edge of your bed at dusk. The following afternoon, flip it over — slugs will have sheltered underneath. Collect and dispose of them.
- Beer traps: Sink a shallow container flush with the soil surface and fill with an inch of cheap beer. Slugs are attracted by the fermentation smell, fall in, and drown. Replace every few days and after rain.
- Iron phosphate bait (Sluggo): OMRI-listed and approved for organic gardens. Iron phosphate breaks down into iron and phosphate in the soil — both plant nutrients. Apply around the perimeter of beds after rain.
- Morning watering: Water in the early morning rather than the evening. Evening watering leaves soil moist overnight — ideal slug conditions.
- Copper tape: A physical barrier around raised bed edges. Slugs receive a mild electrical reaction from copper and avoid crossing it.
What Not to Use
Diatomaceous earth is largely ineffective against slugs — their protective slime coating means the sharp particles do not affect them — and it kills firefly larvae and ground beetles that are actually controlling slug populations for you. Avoid it. Slug baits containing metaldehyde are toxic to pets, birds, and beneficial soil organisms and are not permitted at the Fairfield Community Garden. Pyrethrin and neem oil can also harm firefly larvae. Use these only as an absolute last resort and never near established beneficial insect habitat.
The firefly connection — our underground allies
Firefly larvae, commonly called glowworms, spend one to two years living in the soil before they emerge as the blinking adults we love to see on summer evenings. During that entire underground life, they are active, carnivorous predators. Their preferred prey includes slugs, snails, and soft-bodied soil insects. Research indicates they can reduce slug and snail populations by 60 to 80 percent when habitat conditions are right.
Radim Schreiber found glowworms on the edge of a pond near Fairfield just weeks ago. These larvae are in the soil around our community right now. Whether or not they are in your garden depends largely on one thing: whether we have kept the soil hospitable to them. And that is something every one of us can influence directly.
What firefly larvae need to thrive — what we can do to support them
- No synthetic pesticides: Lawn and garden pesticides kill firefly larvae along with their prey. This is one of the most meaningful reasons our organic-only approach is not simply a rule — it is a genuine ecological commitment.
- Low soil disturbance: Frequent tilling destroys firefly larvae and their habitat. Low-till and no-till practices, including broadforking instead of rototilling, are directly compatible with firefly habitat.
- Moist soil with organic matter: Firefly larvae need the same moist, humus-rich soil that healthy vegetable gardens need. Building your soil with compost supports both crops and firefly population simultaneously.
- Moderate mulch: Firefly females lay their eggs directly in soil. Mulch layers deeper than 4 inches prevent this. Keep mulch at 2 to 3 inches.
- Reduced light pollution at night: Adult fireflies rely on their light signals to find mates. Turn off unnecessary exterior lights during peak firefly season in June and July.

The Fairfield Community Garden’s organic-only policy — no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides — is one of the most firefly-friendly commitments a community garden can make. Every time you garden organically in your plot, you are actively contributing to the conditions that allow firefly larvae to thrive in the surrounding soil. Approved slug management methods are hand-picking, board traps, beer traps, and iron phosphate bait (Sluggo). Per the member agreement, infestations that pose a risk of spreading to neighboring plots must be reported to the Leadership Team.

Late April Reminders — Things That Make the Real Difference
We want to close with a collection of reminders and practices that, in our experience, make the real difference between a garden that merely survives the season and one that genuinely thrives. None of these are complicated. They are all about attention and consistency.
Check your plots every few days
Late April growth is remarkably fast, both for crops we want and weeds we do not. Check your beds every 2 to 3 days and remove weeds while they are still small. Small and often is the right approach here.
Thin your seedlings — no mercy
Overcrowded plants produce less and are more disease-prone. Thin to seed packet spacing once seedlings are 1 to 2 inches tall. Use scissors to snip rather than pulling. Eat the thinnings in a salad.
Label everything you plant
It is nearly impossible to tell one seedling from another in early spring. Label each planting with the crop name, variety, and date planted. Date labels become part of your garden record for future seasons.
Keep a simple garden journal
Notes in a phone app, pocket notebook, or even a napkin in a folder are enough. Record what you planted, when, and what worked. This information compounds in value every single season.
Protect plants from late frost
Keep frost cloth or old bedsheets on hand. If the forecast shows lows below 35°F and you have transplants in the ground, cover them before sundown — not in the morning after. Temperature drops rapidly after sunset.
Do not work wet soil
SE Iowa clay soils compact severely when worked wet. The squeeze test is your guide — if a handful holds a muddy ball, wait another day. A single session of working compacted clay can create problems that take multiple seasons to correct.
Begin watching for early pests
Aphids, cabbage worms, and flea beetles begin appearing in late April. Check the undersides of brassica leaves at every garden visit. Hand-pick caterpillars and eggs. Row covers installed before infestation begins are one of the most effective organic tools available. Per the member agreement, infestations that risk spreading must be reported to the Leadership Team.
Plan for warm-season crops now
Even though tomatoes and peppers cannot go in the ground until after May 10, decide now where they will go in your plot. If you have not yet sourced your warm-season transplants, do it this week. Waiting until May often means settling for whatever varieties are left on the shelf.
Mulch your beds now
A 2 to 3 inch layer of organic mulch conserves soil moisture, suppresses weeds, moderates soil temperature, and feeds the soil as it breaks down. Keep it a few inches away from plant stems to prevent rot. At the FCG, please use the provided organic straw.
Succession planting starts now
Make smaller plantings of lettuce, radishes, and spinach every 10 to 14 days rather than one large planting. Mark your calendar now with two or three future sowing dates for your fastest-maturing crops. It takes almost no extra effort and transforms how generous the season feels.
FCG volunteer hours reminder
Each FCG member is asked to contribute at least 4 hours of volunteer service per growing season to help maintain our shared spaces. Look for work party announcements from the Leadership Team and plan to participate.
May 15 is the FCG deadline
FCG plots must show evidence of being planted by May 15, or the plot may be forfeited. Use the planting guidance in this post, the ISU Extension planting calendar, and the Almanac tool (enter zip 52556) to plan what goes in and when. Per the member agreement, any plot-level concerns should be communicated to the Leadership Team in writing.
