Waste Management
The Waste Management subcommittee supports Fairfield and Jefferson County by helping communities better understand waste streams, reduction opportunities, and the long-term impacts of materials management on environmental and community resilience. As a nonprofit, this group does not operate waste services or set policy; instead, it serves as a research, education, and coordination resource that can assist municipalities, utilities, businesses, and residents in exploring waste reduction and circular economy strategies.
Current efforts focus on data gathering, public education, and partnership-building related to solid waste, recycling, composting, and wastewater awareness. This work helps local decision-makers and service providers access clearer information, community input, and practical examples that can inform locally led waste management and infrastructure decisions over time.
Waste Management Focus Areas
Initial focus areas will provide research, analysis, education, and outreach support for waste-related planning and program development. The plan emphasizes understanding local waste flows, increasing public awareness, and supporting collaborative efforts that reduce waste, improve system performance, and strengthen environmental outcomes, while keeping implementation authority with responsible entities.

Reduced Solid Waste to the Landfill
This focus area supports efforts to better understand Fairfield and Jefferson County’s solid waste stream and identify opportunities to reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost materials. Work in this area emphasizes waste characterization, public education, and exploration of circular economy strategies, helping communities and partners evaluate diversion options and pilot programs that reduce landfill reliance over time.

Wastewater Education & System Resilience
This focus area focuses on educating residents and businesses about how everyday disposal habits impact the wastewater treatment system and local waterways. Work in this area emphasizes accessible education, practical guidance, and collaboration with wastewater professionals to reduce inappropriate inputs and support long-term system health.
